How can we keep the light on in school?

Teachers can play a powerful and significant role in preserving a child’s innate curiosity and cultivating reflective and innovative thinking in students so they may thrive in the 21st century.

As educators, we can:

  1. a)keep the light on in our students, with public or private school curricula by differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students;

  2. b)bridge between home and school environments by letting your child’s teacher know what your child’s needs are, how they learn and that you’re willing to offer support in any way;

  3. c)inspire students to reach "beyond what’s assigned” and find context and meaning in what is thereby developed an integrated “whole brain”process instead of “teaching to the test”;

  4. d)engage a student regardless of his learning style and teach self-management instead of outdated and ineffective management systems that sap motivation, lower performance and increase anxiety;

  5. e)connect with students to build relationship, both between teacher and student as well as among students, cultivating the power of empathy and community.

  6. f)keep our own light on through mindfulness, emotional awareness and self-empathy in order to cultivate our own resilience and, in turn, our connection with students.
