In this video, the child leads the puppet’s movements and chooses its responses, which becomes his means of connecting to his own emotions, and in doing so, invites connection with the parent, caregiver, teacher or therapist. This creates a platform for a child to guide his own self-disclosure, define his own emotions, and make room for resolution and (re)connection.
In engaging through this example of play, the adult asks questions in the spirit of curiosity, not as the keeper of answers, and does not interpret the puppet/child’s responses. The child is free to reveal and “act out” his inner state, thoughts and emotions without judgment or direction.
The child in this video is 7 years-old.
